Today is Memorial Day, May 26, 2025. Across the country, many mark this day as the unofficial start of summer, filled with barbecues, parades, and time with family. While these traditions are cherished, it’s vital, especially within our military community, to pause and reflect on the profound reason we observe this federal holiday. As a real estate professional privileged to work closely with military families here in the Arlington area and beyond, I feel it’s important to take a moment together to remember.
The Origins of Memorial Day
Memorial Day wasn’t always known by this name or observed nationwide. Its roots trace back to the years following the Civil War. Local communities began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. This practice, initially called Decoration Day, was a way to honor the immense sacrifices made during that conflict.
One of the first large-scale observances was organized by General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, who called for a nationwide day of remembrance in 1868. He chose May 30th as the date, likely because flowers would be in bloom across the country. Over time, the observance evolved to honor American military personnel who died in all wars. After World War I, the name Memorial Day became more common, and in 1971, Congress established it as a federal holiday occurring on the last Monday in May.
Remembering the True Meaning
It’s easy to confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Veterans Day, observed in November, honors everyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a more specific, solemn purpose: to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice – those who died while serving our country.
This day is dedicated to reflecting on their courage, selflessness, and the price they paid for the freedoms we enjoy. It’s a day for gratitude, remembrance, and paying tribute to those who never returned home from the battlefield, those lost in training accidents, and all who perished in service to the nation.
Why This Day Matters to Our Community
For military families, the significance of Memorial Day often hits closer to home. You understand the realities of service, deployment, and the potential costs involved in a way few others can. Many of you have served alongside heroes, known someone who made the ultimate sacrifice, or perhaps carry the memory of a loved one lost in service.

Amidst the long weekend activities, let’s all find a moment to pause. Consider visiting a local veterans’ cemetery or memorial. Participate in a community observance or simply observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time. Sharing stories of heroes, learning about a particular conflict, or explaining the day’s meaning to younger generations are all meaningful ways to honor the fallen.
It’s because of the sacrifices we remember today that we have the safety and security to build lives, raise families, and enjoy the concept of “home.” On this Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to the heroes who gave their all and to the Gold Star families who carry their legacy.
