Your Front Door Is the Main Event This Week
On Halloween night, your porch, steps and front walk see more traffic than they do the rest of the year. Small kids in long costumes, parents holding flashlights and teenagers moving fast all head straight for your door, usually after dark.
A little prep makes that trip safer for every visitor. And if your home is on the market, or will be after a PCS this winter, the same work gives you a warmer, brighter first impression for buyers.
Start With Light
Good lighting is the single most useful thing you can add. Trick-or-treaters need to see each step, and buyers who tour in the evening need to see the house.
- Replace dim or burned-out bulbs in your porch light, garage lights and any lamp posts.
- Light the whole path, not just the door. Solar or low-voltage path lights along the walk help people spot curbs, edges and steps.
- Add a motion light near the driveway or side entrance if those areas are dark.
- Turn your porch light on before dark. The National Institute on Aging recommends keeping it on at night, and on Halloween it also tells families you’re welcoming visitors.
This matters even more next week. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, so it will be dark earlier every evening.
Make Steps and Walkways Trip-Free
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises anyone expecting trick-or-treaters to remove obstacles from lawns, steps and porches. Costumes, masks and dark yards make it easy to miss a hazard.
- Clear the path. Move hoses, planters, toys, bikes and packages out of the way.
- Rake and sweep. Wet leaves on steps and walkways get slippery fast.
- Check your steps. The National Institute on Aging suggests making sure outdoor steps aren’t broken or uneven and adding non-slip material where needed.
- Tighten the handrail. A loose rail is worse than none, because people trust it.
- Tape down or reroute cords for lights, fog machines and inflatables so they don’t cross the walk.
Decorate Without the Fire Risk
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 835 home fires per year from 2020 to 2024 that started with decorations. Nearly half (47%) happened because decorations were too close to a heat source, and about one-third (33%) were started by candles.
A few simple choices lower the risk:
- Use battery-operated lights or glow sticks in jack-o’-lanterns instead of open-flame candles, as CPSC recommends.
- Keep any real flame away from the steps. CPSC warns that costumes can brush against candles on landings and doorsteps.
- Keep dried cornstalks, hay bales and paper decorations away from light bulbs, heaters and candles.
- Inspect light strands for cracked sockets, frayed wires or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets. Use only lights tested by a recognized lab.
Fall Curb Appeal for Homes on the Market
If you’re selling, shorter days push more showings into late afternoon and evening. A well-lit, tidy entry helps buyers feel good about the house before they reach the door.
- Keep decor simple. A few pumpkins, a mum or two and a clean doormat look warm. Skip scary props, fake cobwebs and anything that hides the front of the house.
- Freshen the front door. Clean the door and hardware, and consider a fresh coat of paint if it looks worn.
- Tidy the beds. Pull spent summer plants, edge the lawn and add fresh mulch.
- Clean the gutters so buyers don’t see leaves hanging over the edge.
- Take decorations down soon after Halloween so your listing photos and showings don’t look dated in November.
A Quick Word on Liability
According to the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), the liability part of a standard homeowners policy covers injuries and property damage you or your family cause to other people, with limits that generally start at about $100,000. Renters policies include personal liability coverage too. If you’re not sure what your policy covers, call your agent before the holiday. If you live in privatized base housing, check your lease and the installation’s posted trick-or-treat hours.

1. Walk your front path after dark: Go from the sidewalk to your door at night and note every dim spot, loose step and trip hazard. Fix what you find before Saturday.
2. Swap flames for batteries: Put battery-operated lights in your jack-o’-lanterns and keep decorations away from bulbs and heaters.
3. Plan the cleanup: Pick a day right after Halloween to take down decorations and refresh the entry, especially if your home is listed or about to be.
